Starting from academic year 2023-24, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Technology University (BATU), headquartered in Lonere, will offer under graduate engineering courses in Marathi medium. It will begin with offering 30 seats in the electronics and telecommunications branch of engineering.

This is the second institute in Maharashtra to offer engineering education in Marathi. Earlier, this was offered in only one engineering college from Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering (PCCOE) which was among the 19 selected engineering college across country, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship project of teaching engineering education in mother tongue, under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

At BATU, engineering in Marathi will be offered only at the university level, in this academic year. Whereas affiliated colleges who are keen to offer engineering in Marathi will be able to do so from the next academic year. BATU will be providing them with the course curriculum in Marathi.

According to the NEP implementation plan by the state’s higher and technical education department, universities and autonomous colleges can begin the implementation from this academic year whereas affiliated colleges will follow next year.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr Karbhari Kale, said, “As government, central as well as state level is encouraging technology education in mother-tongue, we are very glad to start one engineering branch in Marathi from this academic year. We have been granted permission under the NEP 2020. Out of a total 30 seats, we have already confirmed admission on close to 6 seats.”

Admission will be through a centralised process conducted by the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell.
