A 25-year-old woman, identified as Jamuna Dera, suffered burns after two bike-borne assailants threw acid on her face in the early hours of Tuesday in Dharavi. Dera, according to the police,is a singer at a Kherwadi-based bar. The Dharavi police have registered a case and are on the hunt for the accused.

“The incident took place around 4 am. Apparently, the victim, who works as a singer at Sibbu Palace in Kherwadi, was going to her Adarsh Nagar residence in an autorickshaw,” said an officer of the Dharavi police station.

When she was passing through PMG colony in Dharavi, the two chased the rickshaw. “The person riding pillion threw acid on her from a container before speeding away,” said the official.

The rickshaw driver,Shyamlal Srivastava, rushed Dera to the Bhabha Hospital where she is being treated for injuries. Srivastava suffered minor injuries whereas Dera has around 20 per cent burns on her face, police said.

“We suspect that the person, who threw the acid, might be a spurned lover and that he planned the attack and even followed the rickshaw on his bike right from the bar till Dharavi before throwing acid. We will take Dera’s statement when she gets well. We will also talk to her colleagues at the bar to figure out if they know anything about a person who might have a grudge against her,” they said.
