Designer Sarika D’s collection of bags and clutches is a mix of traditional and modern global influences

Sarika D may be known for designing bridal wear, saris and cocktail wear but it’s her collection of bags and clutches that’s been her speciality all along. At a recent special preview of her collection at Resham Bhavan in Mumbai, she showcased an interesting array of clutches and purses — all of which have been handmade for the festive season. “My inspiration comes from varied sources, including my travels. In this particular line,I have used a lot of African elements; be it the colourful beads and feathers or the animal printed faux leather,” she says.

However, those looking for a clutch to complete their Indian traditional ensemble also have a lot of options to choose from. “I have used several fabrics — from chanderi and satin to bandhni. The sequins and traditional motifs such as paisleys add to the festive flavour,” Sarika points out.

Another interesting range is the line of bags and clutches made from waterproof cane and jute. “This line is simple and yet classy; one can carry it as part of day wear too,” she emphasises.

Not surprisingly, her collection also sells out of stores such as Aza,Amara and Elahe. But she is quick to note that she is happy with her current retail format and has no plans of starting her own store anytime soon.
