The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is planning to merge the 25-year-old Aurora flyover with the upcoming King’s Circle flyover at an estimated cost of Rs 30 crore. The flyover will run from the Ramnarain Ruia College north end of Aurora flyover to Maheshwari Udyan.

The length of the King’s Circle flyover will be incresed from 1,164 metre to 1,454 metre post the merger. The Aurora flyover runs over Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road and the intersection of the same road with Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road. It is near the King’s Circle railway bridge.

According to MMRDA,motorist will save 20 minutes by skipping four signals. The MMRDA has not indicated the time frame for the merger of the two flyovers. But officials said that this will delay the commissioning of the south-bound segment of the King’s Circle flyover by five to six months. The north-bound lanes are expected to open in July-August,while the south-bound lanes will open in January-February 2011.

“The merger of the two flyovers is expected to reduce traffic woes considerably. In addition to the reduced travel time for the north- and south-bound motorists, petrol consumption too will als be reduced,” said Dilip Kawathkar,Jt. Project Director (PR),MMRDA.
