At a meeting of Mumbai’s District Planning Committee on Tuesday, BJP MLC Prasad Lad raised encroachments in police colonies in South-Central Mumbai and BEST employee housing as well as requests for a Rs 5-crore land acquisition fund for the Archaeological Survey of India and a Rs 5-crore fund for cultural centres, among other issues.
Various subjects under the Annual District Plan 2025–26 were discussed during the meeting, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who is also the guardian minister for Mumbai city.
Lad also highlighted serious concerns regarding irregularities in housing transactions under the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA).
In response, Shinde instructed officials concerned to take immediate action, according to officials.
Shinde said at the meeting, “All development works undertaken through the Mumbai District Planning Committee should be completed within a fixed timeline while maintaining quality standards. Timely and high-quality execution of development works will ensure the holistic development of the district. Each scheme must reach the citizens effectively and contribute to sustainable development goals.”
Lad also pointed to the issue of geotagging on the Eastern Freeway and the increasing illegal Bangladeshi settlements in the area, including unauthorised prayer spaces and constructions. The deputy chief minister assured the meeting that appropriate action would be taken in both matters.
Lad said, “It is our duty to raise the concerns and expectations of the citizens and seek practical solutions. The positive response from DyCM Shinde will accelerate development works in Mumbai and improve facilities for the people.”
