The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) affiliated to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has served a disqualification notice to nine MLAs and three MLCs from party president Sharad Pawar’s camp who have not joined hands with Ajit.

According to sources within the Ajit group, the disqualification notices were served Wednesday night and submitted to Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar as well as the office of deputy council chairperson Neelam Gorhe. The notices have been served to MLAs Jayant Patil, Jitendra Awhad, Rohit Pawar, Anil Deshmukh, Rajesh Tope, Sandeep Kshirsagar, Sunil Bhusara, Balasaheb Patil and Prajakt Tanpure. In the council, notices were served to Eknath Khadse, Arun Lad and Shashikant Shinde.

Three MLAs — Ashok Pawar, Sumantai Patil and Nawab Malik — have been excluded from both sides as no disqualification petitions have been filed against them by either side.

The move comes as both factions of the NCP are set to be present at the Election Commission of India (ECI) on October 6 after the Ajit group approached the poll body staking claim over the party name and symbol. Ajit and eight others joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—Shiv Sena government on July 2.

Claiming they are the real NCP, the Sharad Pawar group has already served disqualification notice to 41 MLAs who have chosen to joins hands with Ajit. The Sharad Pawar has also served disqualification notice to five MLCs as well, which are Satish Chavan, Vikram Kale, Aniket Tatkare, Amol Mitkari and Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar.

“We have majority MLAs with us. We will present this side in front of the Election Commision,” said a senior leader from the Ajit Pawar group. He claimed that another MLC Babajani Durrani, too, has joined the Ajit camp.

The move emphasises the ongoing tussle between the two groups, especially at a time when the Sharad Pawar group has been denying any split within the party.

In an interview to The Indian Express, NCP Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule had said that there was no split in the party and it was only an “emotional split”.

A few days ago, NCP’s senior Rajya Sabha MP Praful Patel was seen clicking photographs with party chief Sharad Pawar in the new Parliament building. While the top leaders are maintaining their cool publicly and avoiding criticism against each other, both sides seem to have begun preparations for the ensuing battle and the disqualification notice is said to be a part of that process.

Sources in the office of the legislative council deputy chairperson Neelam Gorhe said that she will soon call the MLCs from the Ajit group to present their side over the disqualification notice served to them.
