Ahead of the seat-sharing talks of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which is expected to begin in the coming week, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will analyse the ground situation in seats where its candidates came second during the 2019 general elections.
NCP president Sharad Pawar has given directions to the party leaders to undertake detailed analysis of the present political situation in respective seats based on which the NCP will raise its demand in the seat-sharing talks.
In 2019, under the seat sharing arrangement the NCP was allotted 22 Lok Sabha seats out of a total of 48 seats in Maharashtra.
Out of the 22, NCP contested 19 and won four. It had left the other three to allies and smaller parties.
“The political situation has since changed completely. Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena is now part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi. While seats won by us will remain with the party in 2024, those where we came second also need to be scrutinized to know ground reality,” said an NCP leader, who attended the meeting of party leaders Wednesday.
The NCP was in direct contest with united Shiv Sena on 12 seats in 2019.
Out of these, Sena LS MPs from Buldhana, Nashik, Kalyan, Maval and Kolhapur have joined hands with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
It had left the Hatkanangle seat to Raju Shetti as he was then the sitting MP.
Shetti lost to Shiv Sena’s Dhairyasheel Mane, who has now joined hands with Shinde.
The NCP had also supported independent Navneet Rana in Amravati, who after defeating Sena’s Anand Adsul, has extended support to the BJP.
Apart from that, NCP stood second in seven seats won by the BJP, which were Jalgaon, Bhandara-Gondiya, Dindori, Mumbai North-East, Ahmadnagar, Beed and Madha.
The political party is therefore focusing on these eight seats and have deputed a special leader to gauge the ground reality and submit a report about the party’s condition, in case of an election.
“While we will continue with our existing seats, we need to have a detailed analysis of seats where we were on number two. It will be used during seat sharing talks which will begin in the coming week,” said the leader.
On June 10, the NCP will be holding its foundation day programme for the first time in Ahmednagar.
Even though its candidates came at the second spot in Parbhani, Osmanabad (now Dharashiv) and Thane, the three MPs from these constituencies are with Thackeray. The NCP won in Raigad and Shirur.
