(Express photo by Deepak Joshi)Actor Siddhanth Kapoor appeared before the Mumbai police Tuesday morning to record his statement in connection with a Rs 252-crore narcotics case linked to the seizure of mephedrone at a factory in Sangli last March. The police had summoned Siddhanth in the case after his name cropped up while questioning an alleged major narcotics supplier, Mohammad Salim Shaikh alias Lavish, who was recently deported from Dubai.
“We had summoned Siddhanth, following which he appeared before us on Tuesday morning. We are currently recording his statement,” an officer said.
More people named by Lavish will be summoned to record statements in the case being investigated by the Anti-Narcotics Cell, the police said. “As of now, we are just recording the statements of these people who Lavish has claimed attended parties where he supplied drugs. We are verifying his claims,” an officer said, adding that based on the investigation and the evidence gathered, the police will decide who will be named as accused or witnesses in the case.
Apart from Siddhanth, the names of several others, including actress Nora Fatehi and influencer Orhan Awatramani – popularly known as Orry, had cropped up in connection with the case. The police had earlier summoned Orry, but his lawyer said he was out of town. Orry is now slated to appear before the police on Wednesday morning to record his statement.
Taking to social media last week, Fatehi had posted, “….It seems like my name is an easy target! but i wont allow it to happen this time! It happened once before, you guys tried to destroy me with LIES and it didnt work.. i watched silently as everyone tried their best to slander my name, smear my reputation and use me as clickbait! Please refrain from using my name and image on situations that have absolutely NOTHING to do with me! This will come with a heavy heavy price! Respectfully.”
Alleged narcotics supplier Lavish was brought back from Dubai in October and arrested in the Rs 252-crore Sangli mephedrone seizure case. According to the police, he was the right-hand man of drug lord Salim Dola and looked after the manufacturing of mephedrone in at least seven states. The police had managed to get Dola’s son, Taher, and nephew, Mustafa Kubbawala, deported between June and July this year.
Sources said the police were also tracking Dola, suspected to be hiding in Turkey, where he had moved from the UAE after his son and nephew were deported.
