Police officers and bureaucrats have often been indicted and subjected to departmental inquiries for reasons but rarely do they face the music, according to a government resolution (GR) which seeks to correct this lacuna.
The GR passed by the state government recently states that preliminary inquiry that precedes the departmental inquiry being kept pending was the reason why no action is taken against the erring officials.
The state government passed a resolution that seeks disciplinary action against any officer responsible for delaying any inquiry. The GR issued by chief secretary J P Dange on October 31 stated that in most cases, the officers are saved due to internal management. The GR has set up deadlines for the completion of inquiries in every case. No case should take more than one year,it states.
According to a source, the move was taken after several representations were made before the chief secretary complaining about the laxity shown in inquiries and how probes were scuttled just before a final report was sent to the respective department.
The cases remain pending for years,in many cases due to callousness on the part of the investigating officer and in some, due to vested interest, the GR states.
Now,the state government has decided to take strict action against such officers.
The GR clearly states such negligence would not be tolerated henceforth. Without proper reason,no case would remain pending for more than a maximum period of a year.
