The Mumbai Police are considering Tata Motors’ ‘Rs 1 lakh car’ Nano for use as a police patrol vehicle in the city.

A trial Nano LX has been parked inside the police headquarters at Crawford Market for the time being.

The back seat has been modified to make space for a police wireless set, with the police logo and colours on the exterior. The vehicle is also fitted with an amber beacon.

Sources said the Nano is being considered as a patrol vehicle due to the lower cost and easier maneuverability compared to regular police jeeps or vans in the narrow and congested bylanes of the city.

It is also a safer option for night patrolling as compared to motorbikes, with the added advantage that weapons can be stored in the vehicle easily.
