Even as the civic administration has decided to temporarily suspend and penalise a pothole contractor for failing to carry out repair works,a whopping 882 potholes under the responsibility of such contractors are yet to be repaired.
According to the civic pothole tracking website,www.voiceofcitizens.com,882 potholes assigned to various contractors in each ward are yet to be repaired, while 300 potholes falling under the defect liability period (DLP) of road contractors are also unattended as of now.
While DLP contractors are expected to repair all potholes recorded on stretches they maintain during the period for no additional cost, pothole contractors are responsible for smaller stretches of roads.
Unlike the former who work under a DLP of three years and are accountable for roads they build or maintain in the citys 24 administrative wards the latter are given short-term contracts during the monsoon to maintain and upkeep roads in their wards.
We cannot take stringent action against contractors despite their failure to repair potholes on time as it is the peak of monsoon and we will be left with no alternative, said a senior civic official from the road department.
The BMC had allotted Rs 59 crore from its current budget for fixing potholes during monsoon.
Meanwhile,of the 9,962 potholes reported to BMC since June 1 this year,1,176 are yet to be repaired, according to data available on the civic bodys pothole tracking website. As of June 20,there had been only 1,681 potholes after which the numbers began to shoot up.
Despite the civic administrations repeated attempts to inform other agencies to repair potholes falling under their purview, not much has been done. None of the 296 potholes reported on roads belonging to MMRDA,PWD,MHADA or Railways, have been repaired.
