They have been identified as Ajay Baweja (40), Vivek Tiwari (41), Manoj Naranilal (37), Sumitkumar Dhadda (44) and Zakiullah Khan (39). The accused were later produced before a local court, which sent them to judicial custody.

They were using Blackberry phones, and had the team-viewer app installed on their mobiles, cops said. As soon as a delivery was bowled, the accused would update about the delivery on the app, which gives a remote device control to the phone, an official said.

The backend team, yet to be identified, could see what happened and placed bets. “They could still place the bets since the ball was yet to be bowled on TV as there is a nearly seven-second gap between the live game and its telecast on TV. Thus using the advantage of the time gap, the accused would place bets on what would happen on the next ball and would get it right due to prior information,” said Ravindra Salunke, senior inspector (unit VI).

An officer said the accused would travel across the country wherever there was an IPL match and would provide advance information of every ball to other accused for betting.

While two of them are from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, two are from Rajasthan and one is from Nagpur. They do not have prior criminal records, an official said.
