35 institutes lose MSBTE affiliation

The Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE) has withdrawn affiliation to 35 institutes across the state for poor academic standards and discrepancies.

The Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE) has withdrawn affiliation to 35 institutes across the state for poor academic standards and discrepancies. It includes five polytechnics and 30 non-All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) institutions that are recognised by the MSBTE. Another 100 institutes have been given time till August to comply with the prescribed standards to avoid a similar fate.

“We have de-affiliated 35 institutes, which implies that while the current students will continue to study in these institutes, there will be no fresh admissions. Further,we have given 100 institutes time to meet the necessary rules and regulations and remove the discrepancies. The discrepancies include poor facilities and poor quality of faculty to improper teaching-learning processes, poor infrastructure, inadequate facilities and non-availability of books among others,” said MSBTE director P M Khodke.

To keep a tab on the performance of polytechnic institutes, covering disciplines like engineering, pharmacy and architecture among others, the MSBTE had initiated a continuous academic monitoring process.

Subsequently,it had issued showcause notices to over 150 institutes across the state to explain the poor performance of students during the 2011-12 academic year.

The process of hearing was initiated for each institute. Officials from MSBTE had then said if the institutes are not able to justify the reason behind the bad performance or give a proper roadmap as to how they plan to improve the quality of academics significantly, they will stand deaffiliated.

After the hearing, the affiliation of the 35 institutes have been cancelled. “In August, experts will visit 100 institutes to evaluate if they have been able to bridge the gaps, which had been pointed out. The institutes, which fail to act in accordance with the prescribed standards despite the time given to them, will also face deaffiliation,” he said.

These 35 institutes will have to submit compliance reports, which will be scrutinised by experts. If it is found that these institutes have removed the discrepancies, affiliation may be granted to them again.
