Taking lessons from 26/11 attackers targeting the busy Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai, the Railways have strengthened security across Mumbai’s railway stations by equipping them with CCTV cameras and round-the-clock security.
The Central Railway, over the years, has strategically placed 3,459 CCTV cameras at 80 vulnerable spots in different stations within the Mumbai division. The footage are monitored by the Railway Police Force (RPF) personnel stationed at these locations.
On the Western Railway line, 2,770 CCTV cameras have been installed at 31 stations under the Integrated Security System. Another 1,039 CCTV cameras were sanctioned for 62 stations through the Video Surveillance System and 160 cameras have already been set up in specific stations.
Essential security equipment such as walkie-talkies, door frame metal detectors, hand-held metal detectors and barricades have been procured and are actively utilised to ensure passenger safety, said Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relation Officer, Western Railway.
