Less than a week after a 10 per cent water cut was imposed across the island city and western suburbs for three days,a 25 per cent water cut will now be imposed in these areas on Monday,Tuesday and Wednesday. The cut is due to the ongoing work on the 12.24-km Maroshi -Ruparel underground tunnel.

An official from the hydraulic engineering department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the civic body will undertake the work of making cross connections between Upper Vaitarna and Bhandup Maroshi Water main pipelines at Marol Maroshi,Andheri (East). The work will begin at 11 am on Monday and will be completed by 11 am on Wednesday.

Due to this, wards A,C,D G/South,G/North wards and parts of B and E in the island city and parts of H/East and H/West Wards in western suburbs will get 25 per cent less water supply on these days.

Work on the tunnel, the longest in the city,is about 75 per cent complete. BMC appointed the Hindustan Construction Company in 2007 for the Rs 415-crore project, which is expected to be completed and commissioned by September 2013. The tunnel will replace the old upper Vaitarna and Vaitarna mains in this section and will improve water supply to Vakola,Mahim,Dadar and Malabar Hill significantly.
