Former MP and founder of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS), Raju Shetti, announced that in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, his party will be going alone.

Shetti’s announcement is the latest of political somersaults the farm leader has done in his political career. He added that he will not be siding with either of the Shiv Sena factions, or the BJP.

“The SSS will go alone in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. I will contest from the Hathkanangli constituency in the Lok Sabha polls. Besides that, we will also field candidates in at least five more Lok Sabha constituencies,” he said.

He added: “We will raise issues that have been plaguing farmers and the common people.”

Shetti’s party had entered into an alliance with the BJP in 2014 but broke away 3 years later. In the 2019 polls, the SSS entered into an alliance with the MVA, which had shortlisted Shetti as a candidate for Governor nominated MLC. But the list of 12 nominations were withheld by former governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. The MVA government fell in June 2022.

Shetti has been at the forefront of protests over higher remuneration for sugarcane farmers and led the demand of quick repayment in single installments by sugar mills.
