Nashik rural police arrested two men in separate cases for allegedly putting up posts glorifying Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

According to the police, in the first incident, a post by one Shoaib Maniyar allegedly triggered tension in the district’s Ghoti region on Friday. Local residents gathered outside a police station and sought action against Maniyar over the Facebook post which they said hurt their religious sentiments, the police said.

A case was subsequently filed against Maniyar and he was taken into custody.

In the second incident, Salim Kazi, 20, was arrested from the district’s Sinnar for putting up a 25-second video about Aurangzeb as his status message. Local Bajrang Dal leaders subsequently complained about it, which led to Kazi’s arrest.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Dhule district, a memorial that was being set up for erstwhile Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan had to be demolished following complaints by right-wing activists in the city. The Dhule unit of the BJP also complained about it to local authorities. The structure was demolished on Friday morning.

“The structure was illegal and was being built without permission. It was voluntarily pulled down by the people who had constructed it,” an official of the Dhule Municipal Corporation said.
The memorial was built by Dr Farooq Anwar Shah, a local legislator from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).

“The structure was built by the local MLA and it had no permission from authorities. We had a meeting to remove it and the MLA agreed to removing the structure. It has now been pulled down. There is peace in the area,” Dhule SP Sanjay Barkund said.
