Two Engineers of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) solid waste management (SWM) department were placed temporarily under suspension by the civic administration on Saturday after they were caught seeking a bribe last week.

Two Engineers of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) solid waste management (SWM) department were placed temporarily under suspension by the civic administration on Saturday after they were caught seeking a bribe last week.

Deputy chief engineer Vilas Kide and assistant engineer Ashok Tokle were allegedly caught asking for a bribe from a builder while he was seeking permission to dump construction debris at Deonar dumping ground.

Additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani said a local news channel had carried out a sting operation and recorded the incident.

“The complainants then came to us with the CD. Based on our vigilance officer DM Phase’s preliminary report and the prima facie evidence,I issued a suspension order. However,we will get proper forensic testing of the CD done because the voice in the CD is not very clear,” he said.

Based on the detailed report, the BMC will take a decision on whether to revoke their suspension or dismiss them.

The case will then be transferred to the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

A senior official from the solid waste management department said the final suspension letter was issued by the chief engineer of the department on Saturday and once Kide and Tokle sign it on Monday, both will stand officially suspended.
