With the Student Council elections fast approaching,Panjab University authorities have stepped up security on campus to prevent any sort of violence during the polls. From attaching security staff to student groups,to deploying policemen outside boys’ hostels and conducting random raids along with the police at the hostels, the University is leaving nothing to chance in its efforts to control violence on the campus.

The security measures already in place at the University include attachment of two security staff members with each student group to monitor the group’s activities throughout the day, especially during campaigning that has a history of disputes and tussles leading to clashes between organisations. In addition to the existing security on campus, the University is keeping a strict vigil on the movements of student and their organisations in hostels and departments.

Stressing on the elections and security, the Dean Students’ Welfare Prof A S Ahluwalia said,”Our prime focus is to maintain discipline and peace on campus during elections. The authorities have chalked out plans for keeping a check on the students’ activities that includes additional security on the campus.”

The presence of security staff with the student groups has not only reassured organisation members themselves but also students whom they meet while canvassing .
