The saviour

Jyotika Dhiman hogged the limelight when she saved the life of 35 schoolchildren in 2007.

Jyotika Dhiman hogged the limelight when she saved the life of 35 schoolchildren in 2007. A teacher at St Joseph Convent School in Phillaur, she averted a major tragedy on National Highway-1 when the driver of the school van suffered an epileptic fit while ferrying children to the school.

As the bus went out of control,Dhiman rushed towards the driver’s seat and switched off the engine and averted the accident. Dhiman, who was seven-month pregnant at that time, calmed the children down and arranged some help for the sick driver.

“After my delivery,I left the job but people still identify me with the same tag ‘Saviour of schoolchildren’. Wherever I go,whether it is the market,a religious place or a bus stop,I usually come across someone who asks me,“Tusin bacheyan nu bachaya si na?” And listening to a “Yes” from me,they appreciate me and some bless me with long life and good health. It always feels so good. It was a knee-jerk reaction but now I feel that God helped me in saving the precious lives.”

A postgraduate in English with a degree of Bachelor of Education (BEd) and a diploma in computer sciences from Government College,Hoshiarpur, she gets energy from humour.

She said,”For taking care of my son,I had to leave the job. I love to watch channels like POGO and laughter shows and also listen to soft music as this gives me positive energy. I will start my job after my son starts going to school.”

With more than three-year experience in teaching, she said,”I love teaching to keep my knowledge up to date; I keep working on my laptop whenever I get time. Children are a big source of energy. One learns a lot while teaching.”

Jyotika, who got many bravery awards from St Joseph Convent School and several social and religious organisations, said,”I am thankful to God for helping me save the children. I still feel that it was my obligation towards the society. I will continue to serve the society in one form or the other.”
