Sites shortlisted for setting up effluent treatment plants

It seems that the Industry Department and even the district authorities are serious about controlling the pollution level in the city.

It seems that the Industry Department and even the district authorities are serious about controlling the pollution level in the city.

As per the communication with the Chief Minister, four common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) need to be set up for industry within three years’ time period and the process of finalising the land for the project seems to be nearing completion.

Yesterday,a team of industrialists along with the DC,Vikas Garg and GM,district industry centre (DIC),Vishvbandhu went to show them sites for CETPs in the Focal Point,Tajpur Road,Hambaran Road and Industrial Area. All the sites have been liked by the authorities and the same information will be sent to the government for approval.

T.R Mishra,Chairman of Ludhiana Dyeing Association, said,“We have proposed to rope in private companies for setting up CETPs and later on the industry will pay them the user charges as per the waste quantity. This way the work can be done at a faster pace. We are talking to a number of companies who are ready to make CETPs for us in Ludhiana. The investment will be made by companies and later they will be maintaining it as well.”

At Focal Point,a site of Punjab State Industrial Export Corporation (PSIEC) was shown which was less than four acres. Then, another area in new Jeevan Nagar of PSIEC was shown for setting up CETP.

At Tajpur Road, the MC has more than 110 acres of land and a few acres can be used for making CETP for industry in this area. In the Industrial Area and Hambaran Road as well, the vacant government land was shown by industry which could be used for making CETP.

DC Vikas Garg said,“I have seen a number of sites and will be sending a report to the government about their details and feasibility.”

It needs to be mentioned that in the recent past when the electricity connections of dyeing industry were disconnected due to violation of pollution norms, the CM,in a special meeting, had announced that four CETPs would be made in Ludhiana. The CM had announced that while the government land would be provided for the purpose, the industry could suggest the sites.

Mishra said that now we have shown the possible sites and it is the turn of government to revert back. The private companies will be making them and hence government will not have to spend even a penny.
