Salem Tabri resident attempts immolation,held

A mentally disturbed auto-rickshaw driver tried to self immolate on Saturday in front of the District Courts Complex here.

A mentally disturbed auto-rickshaw driver tried to self immolate on Saturday in front of the District Courts Complex here. However,timely police intervention saved the man,who was later taken to the nearby Kochar Market police station.

The man has been identified as Devinder,an auto driver and a resident of Salem Tabri. He tried to set himself alight by pouring kerosene oil all over his body,after which the cop managing the traffic nearby took him into custody. According to Devinder,he was disturbed over the police inaction with regard to his complaints over a domestic quarrel with his brothers. “ My brothers are very quarrelsome and they beat me up at slightest of provocation. I have informed the police about this but the police has not taken any action against my brothers till date,” Devinder said.

A visibly disturbed Devinder was uncontrollable informed Surjan Singh,who was an eyewitness to the incident. “If the cops had not intervened,he would have put himself on fire,” said Surjan. Later,a police case for attempt to suicide was registered against Devinder at Kochar market police station. In-charge of the police post,Balbir Singh informed that a case has been registered and Devinder is still in police custody.
