Protesting against water contamination and scarcity in the city,a dharna was staged here on Wednesday by the residents falling under ward number 22 outside the MC zone-A office for nearly 4 hours in this scorching heat. The residents headed by Harbans Phainta, the ward councillor,Sunita Phainta’s husband broke water pitchers on the streets to protest the long pending issue.

Demanding Joint Commissioner,Mohinder Pal’s transfer over not addressing the problems faced by area residents despite repeated representations,Phainta threatened to stage another dharna if the MC did not solve the issue within 24 hours. Phainta had, earlier staged a dharna when the MC general house held a meeting on July 6 over the issue of contaminated water supply in his area. But no action has been taken by the officials till date.

“There are four temples in Sardar Nagar where the problem is grave and contaminated water supply is causing devotees to offer such water to the idols. I am from BJP and it is really sad that our own Mayor does not listen to our problems,” Phainta said. Gandhi nagar area too faces a similar problem of contaminated water supply.

Accusing SAD councillor Raghubir Singh Bira of not being of much help to the residents of Gandhi nagar area which too faces a similar problem of contaminated water supply,District youth congress president Dimple Rana said,“the SAD councillor has asked the residents not to bother him and get their problem solved from MP Manish Tewari because they voted for him in lok sabha elections.” Rana had held a meeting today over the issue. The Gandhi nagar area too falls under the perview of joint commissioner Mohinder Pal.

Another crisis to have hit the city is the prevailing water scarcity in most areas. Tubewell operators have become one f the primary reasons for the current crisis. In face of the long power cuts extending upto 10 hours, the operators have been instructed to switch on the tubewells only when power is available. But,failure on par of tube well operators to follow these instructions has caused the residents of BRS Nagar,Model Town,Dugri,Pakhowal road,Sarabha Nagar and many other areas to face acute water shortage.

Sources revealed operation and maintainence cell of MC has asked PSEB to supply power as per their schedule time of water supply. However, this does not seem possible given the PSEB power position and hence water scarcity will continue till MC pulls up tubewell operators here.

Youth congress meanwhile has given 3 days ultimatum to MC to improve the water scarcity in the city or they will do agitation.
