The 71-year-old patient was admitted to SPS Apollo Hospital with complication of chest pain, breathlessness and acute heart attack. The patient was further investigated by Dr JS Grewal,Senior Consultant Cardiologist, and was found to have Triple Vessel Heart Disease in which all the three vessels are blocked. In addition, the main pumping chamber of the heart was ballooned, Dr Grewal said.
There was imminent danger of rupture as it had already started leaking. Patient was taken up for emergency surgery. On opening the chest, the ballooning of the heart chamber was very big and the blood had started seeping out of the swelling. Patients all three coronary arteries were bypassed and the ballooned portion was excised and repaired by special complex surgical technique known as Dorrs aneurysmorrhaphy, Dr Mukherjee informed.
The rupture of the heart is very dangerous and rare complication (0.68 per cent) of heart attack. Most of these patients do not survive. These kinds of patients can only be saved by diagnosing and intervening as early as possible. It required coordinated skilled team work and excellent infrastructure, said Dr Mukherjee.
