The zone-level games of the Education department started on Monday, but on a controversial note following the alleged misbehaviour against members of various table tennis teams at the venue in Alpine International School.
The participants accused the Alpine School management of misbehaving with them when some of them reached late. This snowballed into a protest dharna within the school and the venue of the games had to be shifted from Alpine School to Bharti Vidya Mandir. Consequently, the games began two hours late.
Jagrup Singh, convenor, table tennis games, said: It was the first day of the zonal games and some players took a few extra minutes in locating the venue, but the members of the management misbehaved with them. With the players left in the lurch, the teachers made attempts, futile though,to explain their situation to the management.
Singh added that when the school management misbehaved with the teachers too, they decided to raise slogans against the school.
The school management did not respond to the issue, despite repeated attempts made by the Newsline team.
Assistant District Education Officer Rupinder Singh later shifted the venue to Bhartiya Vidya Mandir after last minute arrangements. More than 10 teams under the CBSE and Punjab School Education Board participated in the senior and junior categories of the competiton.
