Physical tests over,medical exam today

Nearly 18,000 candidates from Moga,Ludhiana,Ropar and Mohali registered for the five-day Army recruitment rally under way in the city.

Nearly 18,000 candidates from Moga,Ludhiana,Ropar and Mohali registered for the five-day Army recruitment rally under way in the city. Of these, only 1,429 cleared all physical tests, even as their medical test reports are still awaited.

Nearly 2,000 people were rejected every day as they failed to meet the minimum height criterion and only 20 per cent of the total candidates could clocking 5.40-6.20 minutes in the one-mile run.

Col Sanjive Sirohi, who came from the Army recruitment headquarters in Jalandhar to see the response on Thursday, said: “No doubt, there is a decline in the number of participants, but we are still able to get the cream that we want because our standards are the same.”

The Newsline team, however, spotted several candidates who seemed to have come for the rally only for some fun. A group of 25 people who had come from Baghapurana did not even complete one round in the run and left the premises. Col Sharad Dhindaw said: “They all told me that they come to Ludhiana with plans to visit the Hardy’s World (amusement park in Ludhiana). Participating in the Army rally was secondary.”

He added: “Though we have got a good number of participants, many were not serious and had come without any practice. Such people were rejected.”

Physical tests were over on Thursday and only medical tests will be done on Friday. “Selected candidates will be appear for written exams,” said Vinod Rai Zaida,Deputy Director General,Recruitment Army.

Col Sirohi said: “Due to rapid urbanisation, the stamina among people to endure the physical tests is on the decline and hence few can clear them now.”
