While the process of transforming manual workload into online at the Panjab University (PU) was started a couple of years back, the efforts are seen to materialise. Part from the introduction of online availability of Detailed Mark Certificates (DMCs) for the entrance tests and roll numbers that can be downloaded from this session, the OMR scanning of entrance test applications will also be replaced with online capture of data from next session.

In order to maintain transparency in the hostel allotment, the university authorities are also trying to make it online. Also, the alumni portal, placements, academics, hostels are automatically linked with the students’ data. This year, all the degrees awarded ; i.e. around 55,000 were computerised with coloured photographs of the students.

Making these announcements during a media briefing, the Vice Chancellor Prof R C Sobti said,“Apart from these facilities to be made online, the in the coming session, the entire academic area including the hostels will be facilitated with seamless Wi-Fi system. This was a long pending demand of the students, especially the hostel residents that the existing wi-fi system at present available in the hostels is extremely slow. “Soon, the hostel residents would not face any wi-fi related problems. The work is almost completed and soon will be offered to the students,” said Dean Students’ Welfare Prof A S Ahluwalia.

Apart from the facilities for the students, the University has also recently offered online services for the employees. These include instant information about budget, finance, establishment, accounts, academics that is available to the authorities through integrated software application or PU intranet. Also, with the computerization of the Accounts and Establishment branch – profile, salary, provident fund, service records, bills and achievements are also available online.

Computerisation and online will also come handy to the University authorities when it comes to keep a check on the affiliated colleges. As with the affiliation process that has been made time bound; i.e. to be completed by March 31 every year all data pertaining to affiliated colleges would be made online and college branch will be fully automated.

“The entire data related to colleges including its courses, affiliation status, seats, infrastructure, faculty and other would be made online. The respective colleges have already developed their websites and the latest information would be soon available online,” said Prof Sobti.
