It was destined. Sunder Dass Dhamija came across a blind cow one day, either getting hit by vehicles or being beaten by people. The incident led to the setting up of Govind Godham in Ludhiana and Vrindavan where cows suffering from any kind of disease are treated. Today,Govind Godham is the largest bovine shelter in the country.
Dhamija, who is the founder chairman of Govind Godham, says: We have sheltered over 1,500 ill cows. The godham is for non-milch cows who are suffering from some disease or are found wandering on the roads. Most of the cows here are either suffering from tuberculosis, brucilosis or broken limbs, he says.
Dhamija, who is associated with many other organisations, goes around the godham personally looking at every cow and calf. I love feeding them, he says.
An industrialist by profession,Dhamija runs a factory manufacturing door-fitttings. I only visit my factory for a couple of hours per day. My life revolves around social service only, more so after my son started looking after the business, he says.
Working for the society is more important than accumulating money. I am lucky to have found people who donated money generously for the well-being of cows. What they generally cannot donate is time, for which I compensate. It is a teamwork and our efforts are directed towards providing relief to the underprivileged, he adds.
The godham also runs a school for underprivileged and slum children. The children of Ek Muskaan are given books, uniform and bags free of cost. We work towards making them responsible citizens of the country. I want to see all children of underprivileged parents in the school. This is the aim of the school education for all, Dhamija adds.
