Aligarh-based Noortara, which employs some 350 women working in the organisation giving the women of Aligarh a ray of hope and new life, began its three-day exhibition of hand-embroidered garments at Sutlej Club today.
The Noortara venture was started by Renuka Bajaj and her daughter-in-law,Shikha,in Aligarh some eight years ago. The idea was to empower the uneducated women of Aligarh who were also skilful artists of the Phool Patti and embroidery work.
With the help of Noortara, the women not only started earning but also supporting and sharing financial responsibilities of their families. It is an opportunity provided to the Muslim women by Noortara to become economically independent while remaining behind the veil, said Sikha Gopinath.
Essentially, the work was done only on kurtas and the main fabric used was organdie. However,Noortara has done a fair bit of experimentation with various fabrics and designs to expand its portfolio. Hand-woven fabrics such as kalamkari, mangalgiri,Kota silk and khadi have been included in their work. Noortara has also started expanding in home furnishing besides the beautiful kurtas and suits that Noortara initially started with, she said on the occasion.
The realm of the organisation is that it empowers 350 women Karigars, with there compositely down-to-earth nature and their unidentified rural capacity, with a love for the fabric used and the simple and intricate designs, meant for the everyday working women, who seeks comfortable levels while at work or at home, said Shikha.
Noortara today boasts of clientele ranging from individuals to leading garments chains in India. With the aim of popularising the Phool Patti art and empowering the women of Aligarh,Noortara has organised various exhibitions and shows in major cities of the country. Continuing with the spirit,Noortara is holding exhibitions and sales, she added.
