The states of Punjab and Haryana which are already battling one of the worst-of-its-kind flood situations may have another reason to worry over the weekend.
The Met department has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall over the next three days from July 18. Surinderpal Singh,director,Meteorological department,said: Yes,moderate to heavy rain is expected to cover almost the entire state.
So,while areas around Jakhal,Tohana,Ratia and Fatehabad in Haryana are coping with the floods due to the overflowing Rangolu nallah,areas like Patiala,Ludhiana,Mansa and Sangrur in Punjab are still under water.
In some parts of Punjab,farmers have just begun resowing paddy and heavy rainfall could prove detrimental.
While Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has put the entire state on alert and issued instructions to all deputy commissioners to ensure that overflowing drains are checked immediately,it has been learnt that many areas are still awaiting funds for the cleaning process.
In Moga,a blocked drain overflowed despite minimal rainfall. It is yet to be cleaned.
Dr Satwant Singh Johal,Moga Deputy Commissioner,said: I have issued instructions to clean all the drains that run in our area. We get water from Jagraon and three main drains exist in the city.
