Man sets himself on fire; PowerCom XEN booked for ‘harassment’

Fateh Singh,an employee of POWERCOM post at Jagraon, set himself alight at his residence on Monday evening.

Fateh Singh,an employee of POWERCOM post at Jagraon, set himself alight at his residence on Monday evening. He sustained 75 per cent burns and is currently admitted at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital where his condition is said to be critical.

According to the police,Fateh Singh took this extreme step claiming harassment at the hands of his XEN,Bhagwant Kishore. The Jagraon City police have arrested Kishore.

The arrest took place late on Tuesday night. Earlier in the day,POWERCOM employees sat on a dharna outside the office of the XEN and did not allow him to come out. The XEN was allowed to leave office only after the area police came to arrest him in the evening. Sub-Inspector Swaran Singh informed,“Fateh Singh’s wife Minna Devi has lodged an FIR with the police. In her complaint, she has alleged that Fateh’s officer had scolded him as a result of which he was very disturbed. On Monday evening,he stepped out of his home, poured kerosene on himself and set himself on fire. Neighbours rushed to douse the fire and took him to DMC.”

While investigations into the case are on,it has also been learnt that some months ago, woman workers posted under Bhagwant Kishore too had complained of harassment.

Fateh Singh was known to consume excess alcohol. The XEN in the dock has denied charges of harassing Fateh Singh. Bhagwant Kishore claims that he had returned from a training programme on November 22 and had not even met Singh since that day.
