Impersonator held
A resident of Shivala Road was arrested on Monday for impersonating as an income tax officer and cheating a shopkeeper. The police also recovered an identity card bearing the stamp of the Ludhiana Income Tax Joint Commissioner from accused Sanjeev Kumar. According to the police,Sanjeev approached Attar Singh,who runs a handloom shop in Kiryana Bazaar,and promised him a bank loan if he paid him Rs 7,000. Attar Singh paid the money only to realise later that the person was not an income tax officer but a conman. Subsequently,he informed the police and the accused was arrested. Sanjeev was produced in the court today was sent to two-day police custody.
Health camp held
A free eye check-up camp was organised at Dr B L Kapur Memorial Hospital on Monday under the guidance of medical superintendent Dr Wahegurupal Singh. As many as 437 patients were examined and free medicines were distributed on the occasion. Patients who need surgeries will be admitted in the hospital and treated free of cost. Philanthropist Harikrishan Jain sponsored the camp.
Extension lecture
The National Cadet Corps (NCC) unit of Ramgarhia Girls College,Miller Ganj,organised an extension lecture on drug abuse and AIDS. Dr Pushpinder Singh,in-charge of District Drug Control Programme (Headquarter) and member of the Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle,sensitised the students about the repercussions of drug abuse. Students took a pledge to stay away from these evils,marking the end of the NCC Week celebrations at the college.
Paper-reading contest held
The vocal music department of Government College for Women organised paper-reading contest on Monday where more than 26 students participated. The students expressed their views on the folk music of Punjab and comparative study of Dhrupad and Khayal singing,among other topics. College principal R K Aulakh appreciated the efforts of students distributed prizes among the winners.
Seminar held on environment
The Dharmik Ekta Welfare Society organised a seminar on Save environment,save earth at Sant Jain Senior Secondary School,Daresi Ground. Mayor Hakam Singh Gyaspura was the chief guest. He appreciated the work being done by the society to make people aware about the cause of environment. Office-bearers of the society said they would hold such seminars in other schools too.
Artificial limbs distributed
The Bharat Vikas Parishad organised a camp at the Viklang Sahayata Kender,Rishi Nagar,to distribute artificial limbs among the needy. As many as 45 physically disabled people were given tricycles,wheelchairs,hearing aids and callipers too.
Eloquent Minds finale on Nov 27
The mega final of Eloquent Minds-2009,a declamation contest,will be organised at the BCM Arya Senior Secondary School,Shastri Nagar on November 27. The preliminary rounds were held at different schools in the city.
