City industrialists have expressed their resentment over the Centre’s decision to roll back steel stimulus and thus making the rise in the steel prices imminent. “This means the Excise Duty on steel will increase from 8 per cent to 12 per cent,” said Badish Jindal,Chairman,Punjab Chapter of Federation of Associations of Small Industries of India. He the prices of steel have increased from Rs 26,000 per metric tonne on February 19 to Rs 27,300 per metric tonne on February 20.

“Panic buying in steel has started and the prices of scrap have also increased from Rs 22,000 per metric tonne to Rs 23,200 per metric tonne within a day,” said Jindal.

Cable operator kills man for refusing to pay dues
Anil Kumar,a resident of Darsh Nagar Colony,was allegedly murdered by one Magal,a cable operator after the latter refused to pay his dues. SHO Balwinder Singh said Anil owed some money to Mangal and the accused called Anil to his office last evening where the two entered into an alteration. Mangal allegedly hit Anil on the head as a result of which he died. An FIR has been registered.

Man shoots at brother
Ravinder Singh,a resident of LIG flats in Dugri,was shot at allegedly by his brother Gurinder Singh on Sunday. As per Prabhjot Kaur,victim’s wife,Gurinder had borrowed Rs 4 lakh from Ravinderpal to start some business but now refused to pay back. Ravinder had gone to his brother’s home today to demand the money but was hit in his chin with a gunshot. Ravinder has been admitted at the Civil Hospital and a case has been registered.

SHO transferred to Police Lines
Devinder Singh,SHO,Laddowal,has been suspended for arriving late at Bonker Dogra village where violent protests by members of the Ravidass sect were witnesses last week. Prem Singh has taken the charge in his place.

Protest by Christians
The protest march by the United Masih Dal against the controversial picture of Jesus Christ passed off peacefully on Sunday morning. ADC Kuldip Singh,SDM Manpreet Singh and heavy police contingent were present at the spot. Before the march,the protesters demanded the arrest of those guilty of printing the picture and then vandalising a church in Batala.

276 students conferred degrees
As many as 276 students of BCM College of Education were awarded degrees during the 11th annual convocation and prize distribution held recently. Dr M S Kang,Vice-Chancellor,Punjab Agricultural University,was the chief guest on the occasion. Satyanand Munjal,Chairman of the college,was also present on the occasion.

Ramandeep Kaur adjudged best athlete
Ramandeep Kaur has been adjudged as best athlete while Harmandeep Kaur the best player in the 67th annual athletics meet of Government College for Women which concluded here today. Vikas Garg,Deputy Commissioner,Ludhiana was the chief guest. Dr R K Aulakh,college principal,inaugurated the meet.

Two-day NSS camp gets under way
A two-day NSS camp was organised at Government Girls Senior Secondary School at Kataniu Kalan on Sunday. The camp was organised under the supervision of NSS programme officer Kulpreet Singh. More than 100 volunteers participated in it. Addressing the students,Rajinderpal Kaur,school principal,asked the students to develop leadership qualities.

International seminar held at GNE
An international seminar on “Concrete for Sustainable High Performance Infrastructure: Challenges and Opportunities” was organised for the Civil Engineers and Construction Managers at Guru Nanak Engineering College at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College. The seminar was the part of dissemination strategy of the UK-India Education and Research Initiative research project “Sustainable High Performance Concrete Infrastructures”.

Fashion Flora held at girls’ college
Guru Nanak Girls College,Model Town,organised annual fashion event “Fashion flora ‘10” on Sunday. The students of Department of Fashion Design catwalked on the ramp in their self-designed ensembles. Manpreet Singh Ayali,Chairman,Zila Parishad,and District Chairman,Punjab Pollution Control Board,appreciated the efforts of students.

Gulzar Institute of Management & Technology,Libra,Ludhiana,organised ‘Reflections-2010’. Eight teams of MBA students made presentations on various topics from the wide spectrum of business and economy concerning the national interest.
