Fire officer arrested for taking bribe

Kartar Singh,Assistant Divisional Fire Officer,Ludhiana,was caught red-handed while accepting a gratification of Rs 5,000 for issuing fire break-out certificate to the ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Corporation,Ludhiana.

Surinderjit Singh Mand,Senior Superintendent of Police,Vigilance Bureau,Ludhiana,said,“Fire had broken out in the office of the ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Corporation in Gandhi market recently and fire break-out certificate was required to claim insurance. Complainant Shakti met the accused and asked him to issue the certificate,who in turn demanded Rs 10,000 but the deal was settled at Rs 5,000.”

“The complainant being an employee of the company did not want to pay the bribe. So he approached the Vigilance Bureau. The trap was laid and the accused was caught red-handed in the presence of official witnesses Deepindar Singh Garcha,ETO,and Dharminder Kumar,Inspector,Excise & Taxation,Ludhiana,and one Rajesh Kumar,” said Brar.

A case under Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused.

Blaze at house in Rajguru Nagar

A fire broke out in the house of Rajinder Goel living in Rajguru Nagar on Wednesday. Sources said the fire started as a result of short circuit in an air-conditioner and soon spread in the entire house. As a result of this, two LPG cylinders lying below the AC burst and reduced the house to ashes. Goel had shifted to this house two months ago. Though no one was injured in the incident,the loss has been assessed in lakhs. It took the fire team about an hour to douse the flames.
