Fatten up before fasting,say doctors

Doctors have revealed that fasting once a week and eating a balanced diet can help a person observe long fasts without complications.

Doctors have revealed that fasting once a week and eating a balanced diet can help a person observe long fasts without complications. However,to be successful in observing a long fast,one needs to have enough fat reserves. The doctors,taking the case of the recent fast observed by Anna Hazare for 12 days said that if one avoids over-eating they can also develop self-control to observe fast.

Dr Harkamal Sidhu,deputy medical superintendent,Kapoor Hospital,said,“Fasting once a week helps in stabilising the body provided it is done in the right spirit. Normally,people eat high calorie food while observing fast and eat lavish food at midnight itself or the next day. That does not help. To gradually loose weight,one needs to follow a diet plan religiously and observe a day’s fast once a week.”

Dr Gauhar Vatsayan,Head of Ayurveda department in Deep hospital added,“Looking at Anna’s example it is evident that he had a very restricted diet plan. So in daily routine,we suggest that one should eat a little less than they normally would and practice self-control.”

Dr Vatsayan said,“Normally we don’t recommend fasting at a stretch,but once a week is fine. Eating less in a fast is justified,but shunning food completely is not good.” He however warned that prolonged fasting should not be done by those who have no experience

The doctors indicated that a person who is lean and does not have enough fat reserves will collapse while the one with fat reserves can survive after taking plenty of fluids.

Dr Sidhu said,“Fasting helps in detoxifying the body. But it can help only if the next day one follows a normal diet plan,instead of observing a feast.”

Dr Sidhu said,“With enough fat reserves and intake of energy drinks like nimbu paani ore water alone can help a person fast for a month. However,this is not the recommended way of loosing weight.
