Eight-year-old Monisha was crushed to death by an overspeeding truck at Samrala Chowk this evening. Monisha used to live in the nearby jhuggis. Following the incident,local residents blocked traffic and sat on the road with the blood-soaked body. The dwellers were demanding the arrest of the truck driver,who had fled from the spot after the accident. The dharna was lifted after about 30 minutes and the body was later was taken to the Civil Hospital for post mortem. However,it had to be kept in the mortuary because no post mortem is conducted at the Civil Hospital after 5 pm. Station House Officer (SHO) Harmohan Singh said,We have registered an FIR against the truck driver,who is yet to be identified. The dharna was lifted soon and traffic movement was later eased. We have pacified the family members and will be taking action in accordance with the law. Rash driving has become a major problem in the city,with deaths and injuries occurring regularly due to this.
