With over 49,000 first-time voters in the district, youngsters are finding it a great responsibility and a sense of excitement as well. National Voters Day was observed in different colleges and schools today to make the youth aware of their voting rights.
At fashion designing institute INIFD,voters day was observed with the theme sadda haq aithe rakh. Now I feel that even I too am part of the democracy. I will be casting my vote for the first time, said Cherry Sood,a student of the institute and resident of Dugri. So I too have an equal responsibility like others. Instead of complaining,we need to choose the right candidates who will be with us even after winning, he pointed out.
Amaninder Sond,a resident of Janta Nagar,is another first-time voter. Normally, leaders come to us to seek votes and disappear after winning, he said. They are more bothered about themselves. So each vote is important. I will definitely vote to make a change in the existing system, he assured.
Narinder Singh,a first-time voter in Khud Mohalla, said,In the name of development, hardly anything has been done in my area. When I took up the problem of stray dogs with the elected representative,he kept on delaying. So my vote will be for the one who will deliver on promises. Little drops make an ocean. So each vote is important for the candidates.
At Government College for Women as well,a district-level function was organised at which a debate competition,poster-making competition etc were organised. The winners were given prizes by DC Rahul Tiwari.
He told the students,We often see anomalies around us like littered polythene bags, defaced walls, dirty streets, encroachments by shopkeepers etc and we blame the government for every wrong happening. But we forget about our own accountability as citizens. We never think that, after all,the Government has been chosen by people among us. We need to have individual responsibility and we have to exercise our franchise fearlessly without any influence of religion, caste or any allurement.
The young voters also listened a recorded address of the chief election commissioner on the importance of voting rights.
