Students’ Home at the Punjab Agricultural University is one place that is close to everyone’s heart. Strategically located in the centre of the university, just opposite the Dr M S Randhawa Library, this place is the melting pot for students, teachers and alumni. Everyone throngs this place not only to enjoy a cuppa or Chhinde de mashhoor samose, but also to hold brain-storming sessions as well. And for the roadside Romeos,it is the ideal place to keep a tab on the damsels of the university.
Inaugurated by former vice-chancellor Dr M S Randhawa on August 15,1971,the primary objective of Students’ Home was to help students utilise spare time in the best possible manner.
The building of Students’ Home consists of a large reading room that houses racks for the latest magazines and newspapers in English,Punjabi and Hindi, the building also boasts of an auditorium with a seating capacity of 150. Yet,the main attraction of the place is its open lawns and the two canteens.
Darpanjot,an alumnus of the university, recalls,”For hostellers like us,it was an abode. The large reading room that houses racks for latest magazines was one place where we spent our evenings. I still remember how we would sit on the benches for hours sipping tea. With hardly any surplus money, this place was a haven for entertainment.” The Rock Garden adjoining the Students’ Home, created by legendary Nek Chand,is another attraction. After years of utter neglect, this place has now been spruced up by the university officials.
Manmeet Singh,a student of the university, adds,”Life at PAU is simply incomplete without the Students’ Home. It is like a temple. Summer or winter, this is one place where a majority of students of the university are found.” ‘
