The Rahon road sewerage project, which is being laid under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission(JNNURM),is being delayed for want of payment. Although the main sewer line has been laid, the sewer is not being connected in the inner lanes. As a result, residents of the connecting colonies are not getting any benefits from the project. Councillors Tarsem Bhinder and Sudesh Chaudharys areas fall on the two sides of the roads but waterlogging can be seen outside many lanes because of the absence of sewer connectivity.
Although the main sewer line work is almost complete and just a little work is left, the contractor is not connecting the main line with the lanes, pointed out Bhinder. He has been resorting to dilly-dallying tactics for more than five months. There is no point spending huge sums when the benefits are not passed on to consumers. Bhinder had raised this point at the previous General House meeting as well. The project is being carried out by the Sewerage Board.
However, sources claimed that the contractor who is undertaking this work of the Sewerage Board is not being given regular payments. So he too is not keen to complete the project. A number of industrial units, too, are located on the road and even in the colonies, there is sewerage discharge by these units. This one of the major reasons for the frequent chocking of the sewer lines.
Water with effluent discharge can be seen outside many lanes along the road and even the fly ash is seen dumped here and there.
The work of connecting the sewer lines of the main road with the inner lanes is not supposed to take more than one or two days. But it is not being done for reasons best known to the authorities, lamented Bhinder.
