Buses go full but no shelters at stops

A day after the launch of the city bus service, the 10 buses which ferried from bus stand to Jalandhar bypass went jam-packed throughout the day. The bus service, however, has been launched sans shelters at the designated bus stops.

Today, passengers were seen boarding buses out of excitement. Though these buses are can seat 33 passengers each, over 40 boarded every bus.

Officiating MC Commissioner M S Jaggi said,“On an average, each bus earned ticket income of about Rs 2000 per day. Many passengers went standing in these buses.”

Jaggi said that the bus shelters are not ready yet. He said,“They will be ready in a month’s time. The budget is the existing Rs 65 crore meant for this project.”

He said,“Modern shelters will be made, where the next stop of buses will also be mentioned via electronic display.”

For the time being, buses are running without any fixed schedule and passengers need some luck to get the bus at a particular stop.

Jaggi maintained that despite the lack of a schedule, buses are arriving at bus stops once every eight minutes.

He said,“Passengers will have to bear with us for the time being. After one month,we will give them more organised services.”

The bus service was planned during Congress’ regime and has been launched after more than 6 years and that too in an incomplete manner.

Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal yesterday however had stated that the remaining work will be completed within the next four months. Badal inaugurated it yesterday before the implementation of model code of conduct so as to add this service to SAD-BJP’s credit.
