Medicines worth Rs 7.8 lakh seized

Ludhiana: The district health department seized habit-forming drugs worth Rs 7.8 lakh from Mirchawali gali near Pindi Street on Monday. The team went to the medicine shop on Sunday night along with the police,but found the premises locked. The police force was deputed outside the shop for the whole night. When no one came even in the morning,the team broke the locks. Officiating Civil Surgeon Dr Yashpal Mehta said: “State Drug Controller Bhag Singh,along with the drug inspectors of Ludhiana,Ferozepur,Tarn Taran and Faridkot were part of the team.” He said they seized around 4.5 lakh tablets,1,100 cough syrups,nearly 10,000 injections and capsules each. The owner is yet to be arrested.

Science camp held at PAU

Ludhiana: A five¿day science camp,‘INSPIRE’ (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) commenced at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) here on Monday,in which more than 200 senior secondary students from various Punjab board schools participated. The programme is being organised by the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities (COBS&H),PAU,under the aegis of Department of Science and Technology,Government of India. Chief guest Dr S S Johl,former vice¿chancellor of Punjabi University,Patiala,and PAU,exhorted the students to adopt scientific attitude in life. Deputy District Education Officer Paramjit Kaur,COBS&H Dean Dr R S Sidhu and Director of Research Dr S S Gosal were also present.

PAU holds talk on water management

Ludhiana: An interactive session on ‘Water management for food security in Punjab’ was held at the PAU College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology on Monday. Officials of the National Rainfed Authority (NRAA),Planning Commission,Government of India and Wapcos India Limited,Gurgaon,participated and discussed plan to conduct a survey of the declining water table in different blocks of Punjab. Dean Dr P P S Lubana said PAU had developed several water saving technologies. Dr C J S Pannu,Coordinator of Research (Engineering),highlighted the need for maintenance of canals,drip and sprinkler irrigation systems and rainwater harvesting.
