A symbol of development a few days ago, bridge turns into embarrasment

On August 10,Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had called this railway over bridge (ROB) a symbol of development.

On August 10,Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had called this railway over bridge (ROB) a symbol of development,to which his government and party was committed. Seeing Sukhbir take the cake away,a livid Congress issued a statement saying the ROB was a result of consistent perusal on the part of MP and party national spokesperson Manish Tewari.

A week later and courtesy heavy rainfall, the road on the ROB is giving away. The project has had its fair share of delays and was completed at a cost of Rs 14 crores. This ROB,situated at the Tehsil Road, has been a long pending demand of residents of this town.

Its inauguration, too, courted controversy after the Akali leaders did not allow the bridge to be inaugurated by anyone except the Deputy CM. On the D Day,the ROB was a symbol of pride for the entire Akali machinery, many of whom do not want to talk about it now. Residents in the area said,“The way the road is coming off,we would advise people not to get on it.”

The contractor who has built the ROB is constructing another one near Morinda on Ludhiana -Chandigarh highway, which, too, has crossed its deadline. Local SAD(B) incharge Bhag Singh Mallah did not want to go into the details and dismissed the issue saying,“I have asked the officials concerned to repair the road.”

The pit holes on the road can cause major accidents and a PWD official,on condition of anonymity, said,“This shows the material used for the bridge is not upto the mark. We cannot repair the road till monsoons are over.”
