Complying with the orders of the Supreme Court related to overloading of buses and autos ferrying children to schools,ACP Swapan Sharma and his team challaned some 35 school buses and autos on Monday. The hour-long drive was conducted at about 7 am and the checking was conducted around KVM School,Greenland Public School and Sacred Heart Convent School,Sarabha Nagar.

ACP Sharma informed,“The Court has given very strict guidelines and the Ludhiana Commissioner of Police has ordered that they should be implemented. We are on the task for some five days now and have handed out some 70 challans. However, the reality is that neither the school officials nor the parents are actually bothered about the safety of their wards. The change has to come from within. The police can take penal executive action against the defaulters. But it is the parents and the school officials who have to ensure that they deter overloading.”

According to the guidelines set by the Court, the condition of vehicle should be good. Any vehicle ferrying children to school should seat children as per its capacity and its brakes, tyres and engine should be in good condition.

The windows should have grills, speed governors should be installed in all vehicles, the driver of each vehicle should be in good health, both the driver and the conductor should be uniformed, the buses should be painted yellow and be equipped with first aid boxes and a good fire-fighting system.

ACP Sharma added,“We are keeping a close watch on the autos and every day from 3 pm to 5 pm,autos are challaned. Repeated defaulters are fined and the new ones are educated. But,then, the fact is that we have a paucity of forces and cannot check each and every auto. Even if we had a full force, then too checking them would not be possible. Thus, parents and school authorities will have to come forward and help initiate change.”
