Opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh — SP, Congress and the BSP — have warned of launching a protest over purported objectionable remarks by Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati, mahant of a temple in Ghaziabad, against Islam if no strict action is taken against the priest.

Pointing out that the Indian Constitution guarantees equal respect for all religions, BSP chief Mayawati alleged Sunday that police took action against the protesters while main culprits remain unpunished. Both the Central and the state governments should act against the priest as such disrespect is not acceptable, she said.

“In Ghaziabad, the mahant of Dasna Devi Temple once again made hate speeches against Islam, which created unrest and tension in that area and many parts of the country. The police took action against the protesters, but the main culprits remain unpunished,” BSP chief wrote in Hindi in a post on X.

She further wrote, “The Indian Constitution guarantees secularism i.e. equal respect for all religions. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the Central and the state governments to take strict legal action against those who violate it so that there is peace in the country and development is not hindered.”

Also, Samajwadi Party MP from Kairana, Iqra Hassan, demanded that the National Security Act (NSA) and other stringent laws should be invoked against the priest, saying she will take up the issue in Parliament besides moving the court.

Referring to Yati as a “dhongi, pakhandi” (imposter and a hypocrite), Iqra said on Sunday, “An imposter and a hypocrite like Yati Narsinghananda has again spilled poison… it is unacceptable for all of us. People like him escape every time after sowing the seeds of hatred because the state governments do not fulfil their responsibility. But they cannot go on with their lackadaisical attitude.”

She added, “I will lodge my protest in Parliament and move the Supreme court. The Constitution gives us the right to live with dignity, we will get it.”

Congress MP from Saharanpur Imran Masood also alleged bias in police action, saying, “It is important to understand the situation today as a conspiracy of hatred is being hatched by some. People like him (Yati) are mentally sick and should be in jail. I have written to the Home Minister demanding that people like him should not be spared as they want to spread hatred in the country. Strict action be taken against him by the Central and the state governments.”
