THE BAREILLY Police, investigating a complaint of alleged abduction, gangrape and shooting of a 45-year-old woman, have found that the woman staged the abduction, fabricated evidence and implanted a bullet on her shoulder with the help of a “quack”, who inflicted a superficial wound, in a bid to falsely implicate some local residents to blackmail and extort money from them.

The matter came to light after police examined CCTV footage, call records and medical reports, which raised doubts about the bullet injury.

The police said that during prolonged questioning, the woman admitted to falsely making the claims to implicate a few local residents. She said that a quack had “superficially implanted” the bullet in her shoulder in exchange for money, they added.

The police suspect she planned to use the fabricated case to extort money from the people she intended to implicate, including a prominent local leader and a businessman.

“We have now decided to take action against the woman for fabricating evidence in the case,” said Assistant Superintendent of Police Manush Pareek.

Pareek added that efforts are on to trace the quack who implanted the bullet, along with others who may have been involved in the matter.

The woman, a divorcee who works as a beautician, is likely to record her statement in court on Thursday.

According to the police, they received information on March 29 that a woman had been shot by unidentified persons. A police team reached the spot and sent her to hospital for treatment.

The woman claimed she was on her way to a medical store when five men abducted her in a car. She alleged that three of them raped her before dropping her off, also claiming that they shot at her before fleeing, leaving her injured.

On the basis of a complaint filed by a relative of the woman, an FIR was registered against unidentified persons. The police examined the woman’s call records and collected CCTV footage from the areas between the location where she claimed to have been abducted from and where she was later found.

The footage showed the woman travelling in a tempo and using her cellphone continuously, raising doubts about her version of events.

Pareek said the woman’s medical reports also raised questions about the bullet injury, as there was “no entry wound.” “It shows a cut was made on the skin and a bullet was implanted,” he said. “The bullet was lodged superficially in the upper layer of the skin, and doctors confirmed that such an injury does not cause any medical complications.”

Pareek added that it was also found that in 2022, the woman had made similar allegations, including claims of being shot at. At that time, an FIR was initially registered against unidentified people, but later in another statement she named a few persons. However, around a month later, she retracted her statement, thus forcing the police to expunge the case.
