UP sets up lie-detection test centre in Lucknow

The Uttar Pradesh government has set up and made operational its first lie-detection test facility at the Legal Scientific Laboratory in Lucknow.

The state government has asked all director generals of police — heading the CID,Vigilance,Intelligence,Economic Offence Wing,Anti-Corruption Branch,GRP,Prosecution department,all Zonal Inspector Generals of Police,DIGs,district police chiefs and district and sessions judges — to forward cases needing lie-detection tests to the centre.

The state Anti-Terrorism Squad and Special Task Force have also been asked to forward their cases through these senior officers. For all issues pertaining to such tests,the Uttar Pradesh Police until now had to approach the Central agencies.

“However,we now hope that investigations into such cases will become more successful and speedy,” a senior officer said.

A directive issued by the Uttar Pradesh Police Technical Services Headquarters,Lucknow states: “Any investigating officer seeking a lie-detection test in a case has to inform the respective district police and seek permission from the district court,which in turn will direct the Lucknow Lab for conducting the requisite test,” the directive states.

The tests should be conducted as per the guidelines prescribed by the National Human Rights Commission,the directive adds.
