UP man shoots at 19-year-old woman and kills self; mother regrets ‘ignoring his threats’

A 21-year-old man allegedly shot at a woman before killing himself with the same weapon at Harthala in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district on Saturday. Police said her condition is critical.

The police said Gaurav Gurjar, a resident of a village in nearby Amroha district, had called Pratiksha Jatav, 19, near her village, shot at her and killed himself. He died on the spot.

Rajni Jatav, the mother of the injured woman, told the police that her daughter had informed her several times that Gaurav had been threatening to kill her and also himself if she did not pay attention to him. “I have ignored the threats to her. Had I taken her seriously, the incident would not have happened,” she said.

Rajni said that Pratiksha had gone to college on Saturday morning. When her daughter did not return by 1 pm, Rajni started looking for her and was informed by locals that they had found her lying in a pool of blood around 1 km from their home.

“We rushed her to the local health centre, from where she has been referred to a hospital in Moradabad,” she added.

“We have taken in our possession the murder weapon and two empty cartridges. Pratiksha’s condition is serious in the hospital,” said Krishan Kumar Bishnoi, Superintendent of Police, Sambhal.
