The Uttar Pradesh unit of the Congress party announced a protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will visit his parliamentary constituency, Varanasi, on Thursday for a bilateral dialogue with Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam.
This comes in response to the protest by UP Minister Dinesh Singh in Rae Bareli, who, along with his supporters, tried to stop the cavalcade of the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, during his visit to his parliamentary constituency, Rae Bareli.
Congress UP president Ajay Rai alleged that he was put under house arrest in Lucknow as he was scheduled to leave for Varanasi early Thursday morning along with other party colleagues.
“Yesterday, there was a visit of Rahul ji in his parliamentary constituency, and on the direction of Modi ji, his minister tried to unnecessarily block his cavalcade, and stop him from moving in his own parliamentary constituency,” Rai told The Indian Express.
“It is the BJP which has broken the decorum first. Therefore, to convey that we are not backing down from our slogan of ‘Vote Chor, Gaddi Chor’, we will protest against Modi ji’s visit to Varanasi. They might have put me under house arrest, but Congressmen would protest in Varanasi no matter what,” he added.
In a statement released in the afternoon, the UP Congress media cell said the police even stopped Rai from going to the party office in Lucknow, and meeting the media at his residence under the PGI Police Station area. The media cell also claimed that Rai is under house arrest, and under police watch.
However, when contacted by The Indian Express, R Vasanth Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Lucknow South), denied that Rai is under house arrest.
