UP bypoll results: Azad’s party creates ripples, beats BSP in 2 seats to come third
The two seats where Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) secured third position are Meerapur and Kundarki – both in west UP.

In the Assembly bypolls in UP, the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), founded by Chandra Shekhar Azad four years ago, outperformed BSP by securing third place in two of the nine constituencies. While both the parties failed to win a single seat, the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) performance surprised many. The two seats where Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) secured third position are Meerapur and Kundarki – both in west UP.
In Meerapur in Muzaffarnagar district, BJP ally RLD candidate Mithlesh Pal won the election, defeating SP’s Sumbul Rana by 30,796 votes. Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) candidate Zahid Hussain, who came third, secured 22,661 votes. BSP’s Shahnazar finished fifth, garnering 3,248 votes.
The district unit chief of Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), Babloo Chaudhary, said that Scheduled Caste voters supported their candidate. Meerapur constituency with approximately 3 lakh voters, is predominantly Muslim, accounting for 1.35 lakh votes, followed by 50,000 SC votes and 35,000 Jat votes.
In Kundarki, Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) candidate Chand Babu secured third place with 14,201 votes. The seat was won by BJP’s Ramveer Singh, who polled 1,70,371 votes, defeating SP’s Mohammad Rizwan by a margin of 1,44,791 votes. Of the 12 candidates in fray in Kundarki, 11 were Muslim. BSP’s Rafatulla finished fifth with 1,099 votes.
In six other Assembly constituencies it contested, the party came fourth in five seats.
In Khai, BJP’s Surender Diler won by 38,393 votes, defeating the SP candidate. BSP’s Pahal Singh secured third place with 13,365 votes, while Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) candidate Niten Kumar finished fourth with 8,269 votes.
In Karhaly, Pradip from Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) finished fourth with 2,499 votes. The seat was won by SP’s Tej Pratap Singh, who polled 1,04,304 votes, while Anujesh Pratap Singh of the BJP secured second place with 89,579 votes. BSP’s Avanish Kumar Shakya came third with 8,409 votes.
In Phulpur, Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) candidate Sahid Khan finished fourth with 4,449 votes, while BSP candidate Jitendra Kumar Singh came third with 20,342 votes. The seat was won by BJP’s Deepak Patel, who got 78289 votes.
In Majhawan, Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) candidate Shambhunath finished fourth with 3,529 votes, while BSP’s Deepak Tiwari came third with 34,927 votes. BJP’s Shuchismita Maurya won with 4,922 votes. Chandra Sekhar said that his party is steadily growing and that it will contest all seats in the 2027 Assembly elections.
In Ghaziabad Assembly constituency, Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) candidate Satyapal Chaudhary secured 6,304 votes, coming fifth.
BJP’s Sanjeev Sharma won with a margin of 69,351 votes, defeating SP’s Singh Raj Jatav, who garnered 27,595 votes. BSP’s Parmanand Garg claimed third place with 10,736 votes. A total of 14 candidates contested the seat.
The Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) did not contest the Sishamau seat, which was won by SP’s Naseem Solanki with 69,714 votes. BSP’s Virendra Kumar secured third place with 1,410 votes.
Party chief Azad, who won the Lok Sabha election from Nagina seat earlier this year, had launched the party on March 15, 2020. Chandra Sekhar said that his party is steadily growing and expressed confidence that it will contest all seats in the 2027 Assembly elections.
