Two days after student ‘chased, shot’ in Lakhimpur Kheri, three arrested

Police identified the victim as Amogh Seth alias Dev and said the crime was a fallout of a skirmish between two groups at the Mishrana crossroads in Lakhimpur city. Another person, a bookstore employee, was injured in the firing, police said.

A 20-YEAR-OLD BBA student was chased and allegedly shot dead by a group of assailants inside a bookstore in Lakhimpur Kheri on Monday evening, police said on Wednesday.

Three persons have been arrested in connection with the case, police said.

Police identified the victim as Amogh Seth alias Dev and said the crime was a fallout of a skirmish between two groups at the Mishrana crossroads in Lakhimpur city. Another person, a bookstore employee, was injured in the firing, police said.

Minutes after the scuffle, Seth and a friend, who were on a two-wheeler, were chased for several metres by a group of men, police said. Looking to hide, both entered a bookstore, where Seth was shot by the assailants before they fled, even as his friend ran looking for help around the crossroads, which is near the Mishrana police outpost.

Seth died after suffering a bullet injury on the chest, police said. Meanwhile, the shop assistant, Aditya Kashyap, suffered a bullet injury on an arm, and was soon admitted to a hospital by police. “Kashyap’s condition is stable,”  said a police officer.

Lakhimpur Kheri SP Sankalp Sharma said the two groups had clashed in the past as well. “The feud began a month ago over a trivial matter,” said Sharma.

The SP said an FIR was registered after the victim’s father, Bharat Seth filed a complaint under section 191(2)(rioting), 191(3) (rioting with a deadly weapon), 190 (unlawful assembly)115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 103( murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Kotwali Sadar police station.

The three accused have been identified as Anmol Puri alias Bala, Shantanu Awasthi and Utkarsh Singh, all 20 years old and residents of Lakhimpur Kheri. “After we arrested the main accused Anmol Puri we also recovered the murder weapon… and the accused have been sent to judicial custody,” said SP Sharma.
